Palma

The city of Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the island of Majorca and the entry point into the island for millions of visitors. The main airport is that of Son Sant Joan and the resorts on the Bay of Palma such as Palma Nova and Magaluf run either side of the city.

Although many visitors flock straight to the beaches, the city itself has many interesting sights such as the historic quarter full of tiny churches, Moorish relics and narrow alleyways, as well as grand Renaissance mansions and Baroque churches nestling around a Gothic cathedral. There are also good shopping facilities and a leisurely cafe culture.

Most of the main sights of Palma de Mallorca are contained within the city walls and it is easy to explore on foot or by bus. It is also the central hub of transport for the entire island, with bus services that go through unspoilt countryside to resorts, historic towns and villages. There are even a couple of train lines running out of Palma - one, a beautiful ride up through the mountains to Solle, is an attraction in itself.
